To All who were growing up before me and like music, may tell, that they've listened to Nirvana since early 1990s, at the time Kurt Cobain still alive. Unlucky me, I fell in love with them after the shocking death of the vocalist on April 5th 1994.
I forgot in what way I first saw them. But radio and MTV helped much at that time. You would wait for the time MTV played cool videos. And yes, I spent much time to watch MTV. I don't really remember but I am sure they still play the Nirvana's video from MTV Unplugged, that was recorded in late 1993. Then I can see how handsome the vocalist was. They had great music and extra bonus, they had cute and handsome vocalist who has nice scream! Actually My Mom who also introduced with this band. My Mom! And I felt it super cool..
On 1997 until 1998, I am about 14-15 years old. Not much interesting activity I can do. Radio, magazine and television are media which we can used to gather any information that interesting for us. So like I've said before, we have plenty of time and less distraction. In the time of turbulence, that's called storm and stress in psychology, I found comfort in listening and reading about this band. Yes, I was 3 years behind the actual peak popularity of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. But NEVERMIND!
And yes, NEVERMIND was the album that I often listened. We played it in radio tape, and first we bought the cassette of course. The consequences was we have to listen all the songs in side A and B, yes we can push the button of rewind or fast forward but it wouldn't be good for your cassette. Beside that you always had time to listen to the whole album and remember almost all the lyrics in the album, That's what made you called die hard fans! I will try to check whether I still had those cassette.
In the album Nevermind, Smells Like Teen Spirit was one of the hits and seemed that everybody knew that song. But Drain You was my favorite. Teenage time was like riding a roller coaster. You were confused with yourself, your feeling, people around you. Liked you didn't want to say "Yes!" but you must say it almost all the time. Now, I realize that Nirvana teach me to scream, to let all the aggression out, and start the rebellious attitude. But still I can not sing it out loud at school. This kind of song, dominated by boys. So with few of my friends I just sang Oasis, like Stand by Me or Don't go away from the album Be Here Now.
The rebellious attitude continued. I didn't like most of the lessons at school, except the English lesson, because it helped me to understand the songs. So I spent my time not for studying, but looking for the information about this band. Then I wrote it down in loose leaf papers and archiving it to my binder, full of papers with smiley face in it, you called it Mr. Smile. Some of the information that I got was about the line up of the band. They were Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl.
Since, I felt that the death of the vocalist was tragedy, I wrote quite much about it. How's the life of Kurt Cobain until the day he died, his wife and also his daughter Frances Bean Cobain.
That day, I haven't understood about the substances using, the addiction, the mental illness and depression. I just realized that a boy who can play guitar is cool. And boys who can play guitar and sing are super cool.
